Dave Miller is a Professor of Information Systems Technology at Great Bay Community College. He has been teaching fiber optics technicians at the college since 1999. His background in both engineering and education has led to his belief that the best way for technicians to understand how to work with fiber is to understand the physics behind fiber. This approach has led to the successful certification of over 160 Fiber Optic Association Certified Fiber Optic Technicians (FOA CFOT)

Overcoming the Challenges of Bringing Fiber to the MxU
Multiple Dwelling Unit (MDU) and commercial Multiple Tenant Unit (MTU) buildings, collectively referred to as MxUs, present unique technical, logistic, legal and marketing challenges in extending fiber optic facilities to individual residents and tenants. Since upwards of 70% of potential fiber to the home/small business customers in the United States are located in Single Family Units (SFU) or Single Business Units (SBU), the initial focus of equipment vendors and fiber-optic service providers was on the single tenant structure. As the fiber-optic materials and associated construction strategies to address single tenant structures matured, service providers and their cable and equipment manufacturers turned their attention to address the more challenging, more densely occupied and arguably more lucrative, MxU structures. This presentation will highlight the challenges and solutions to serve individual MxU customers with fiber-optic facilities.
TRADE SHOW
Exhibits Open 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM
