10-year Perspective and Report on New Englands
Specialty Fiberoptic Industry

NUFERN
The
New England Fiberoptic Council (NEFC) hosted a special tour of one of
New Englands top specialty fiberoptic companies, Nufern of East
Granby, Connecticut. Attendees gort a close-up look at the design and
manufacture of specialty optical fiber and fiber laser modules.
After the tour, a presentation on specialty fibers was hosted by NEFC
and Nufern president/CEO Martin Seifert at their facility. The presentation
featured a ten-year perspective on the industry and an informed look at
the decade ahead. Specialty fibers for a variety of applications have
stimulated entrepreneurs and Fortune 100 corporations alike to invest
hundreds of millions of dollars in the industry over the past decade.
Seifert offered a view of the market, industry, and trends for the specialty
fiber business of the future; he has been in the specialty fiber and electronics
industries for over twenty years and previously held management positions
at Lucent Specialty Fibers, Spectran, Rockwell, and Schweitzer Engineering
Labs.
NEFC
Scholarships for 2007
The following
students were awarded scholarships at the June NEFC
Dinner meeting. Each awardee receives compensation toward their
academic expenses, as well as an annual membership in NEFC, use
of NEFC resources and an invitation to attend each monthly
NEFC meeting through the coming year.
