Ciardello Presentation
The fiber optic industry
has long sought a cost-effective way to expand the core of single-mode
fibers, primarily to improve coupling tolerance to lateral mis-alignments.
Today, with increased laser powers, the need for expanding the fiber mode
is even greater due to high incident power density at the fiber-endface.
Cathy Ciardello discuseds OFS expanded core fiber innovations that address
these applications.
Cathy
Ciardiello
is Marketing Manager (Military, Avionics and Sensing) for the Specialty
Photonics Division of OFS. She joined Lucent in 2000 as Product Development
Manager and after the sale of the fiber optic business to Furukawa and
name change to OFS, held several marketing roles: Product Manager for
Gratings, Singlemode Product Manager and Liaison to OFS Labs. Prior to
Lucent/OFS Cathy worked for 3M Specialty Optical Fibers, Inc., in West
Haven, CT in Sales and Marketing, focusing on polarization maintaining
fiber applications. In the early days of fiber optics use, she worked
for ITT Cannon Electric and Cablewave Systems, Inc. designing fiber optic
connectors. Cathy holds a BS degree in Physics from the University
of New Haven and a Masters in Education from Connecticut College.

Emkey Presentation
Beyond
applications for core-expansion, the continuous drive to reduce the size
of optical devices, as well as growing applications for fiber-based optical
power delivery systems, has re-kindled the interest in having compact
and reliable fiber-lensing techniques. These techniques utilize standard
graded-index fibers, fused to single mode fibers, as unitary all-fiber
robust lensing systems. William L. Emkey, President, WorldTech Consultants,
Inc. offered a presentation of this technology and corresponding applications.
Dr.
William Emkey has
spent over 25 years in the fiber optic communications industry. He is
the Founder and CEO of WorldTech Consultants, Inc. Prior to WorldTech
Bill was the Vice President and CTO of the kSARIA Corporation. Before
joining kSARIA he held the position of Vice P resident of Technical Marketing
of Lightchip Corp. Most of Bills fiber optic career was with AT&T
Bell Laboratories and Lucent Technologies, where he worked in the design,
development, and packaging of numerous passive and active optical components,
for which he received the honor of Distinguished Member of Technical Staff.
At Lucent Bill was also responsible for the global marketing of Lucents
analog/CATV product lines. Prior to joining Bell Laboratories he was a
physics professor at The Pennsylvania State University. Bill has an extensive
list of publications and contributed papers covering the fields of education,
optical component design, packaging, and manufacturing. He has been awarded
7 patents. Bill received his BS degree from The Pennsylvania State University
and his MS and PhD degrees in Solid State Physics from Lehigh University.
